Zineb Sedira

Biography

Zineb Sedira, born on April 1, 1963, is a Franco-Algerian feminist photographer and video artist based in London. She is renowned for her work delving into the human connection with geography. In 2021, Sedira was a finalist for the Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation Prize. Born to Algerian immigrants in Gennevilliers, a suburb of Paris, Sedira relocated to England in 1986. She pursued a BA in Critical Fine Art Practice at Central Saint Martins in London, followed by an MFA from the Slade School of Fine Art in 1997. She later engaged in extensive research at the Royal College of Art. Sedira’s early artistic focus centered on portraying women in the Muslim world, particularly featuring her mother and daughter. The influence of her mother, who would don the traditional haik upon returning to Algiers, was profound. Her video piece, “Mother Tongue” (2002), showcases herself, her daughter, and her mother conversing in their respective native languages of French, English, and Arabic. Sedira acts as the linguistic bridge between her mother and daughter who lack a common language. In 2020, it was announced that Sedira would represent France at the 59th Venice Biennale in 2022. Her installation, “dreams have no titles,” transformed the French pavilion into a film studio and screening room, paying homage to the activist films of the 1960s and 1970s while also drawing from her family’s immigrant history in France.
