William Kentridge is a prominent South African artist celebrated for his prints, drawings, and animated films. His unique technique involves a meticulous process of filming hand-drawn animations, making subtle alterations frame by frame. These intricate drawings are exhibited alongside the films as completed artworks. Kentridge, born in 1955, grew up in apartheid-era South Africa, where he was deeply influenced by his parents’ work as advocates for marginalized individuals. He initially aspired to be an actor but found his calling as an artist. His upbringing and keen awareness of South Africa’s socio-political context deeply influence his work, which often addresses issues of social injustice. Kentridge’s art is characterized by expressive form, where the medium and composition play a crucial role in conveying emotions and narrative. His works frequently reflect somber, vulnerable situations, shedding light on the harsh realities faced by many. Kentridge has also delved into printmaking and drawing, with pieces like the “Pit” series and “Domestic Scenes” becoming foundational to his artistic identity. He’s known for works that challenge conventional space and movement, with a notable series based on Watteau’s Embarkation for Cythera. In 1996–1997, he created a portfolio titled “Ubu Tells the Truth,” inspired by Alfred Jarry’s play and connected to South Africa’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
