Wangechi Mutu

Biography

Wangechi Mutu, born in 1972 in Nairobi, Kenya, is a prominent Kenyan-born American visual artist based in New York City. Her diverse body of work encompasses painting, sculpture, film, and performance, with a primary focus on the female body as a subject. Mutu explores themes related to self-image, gender constructs, cultural trauma, environmental degradation, as well as notions of beauty and power. She holds a BFA degree from Cooper Union and a master’s degree in sculpture from Yale School of Art. Mutu’s art is characterized by its interdisciplinary nature, incorporating collage, video, performance, and sculpture. Central to her work is an exploration of gender, race, and colonialism, particularly the violence and misrepresentation faced by Black women. She often depicts femininity in diverse and sometimes unrecognizable forms, using texture, patterns, and otherworldly imagery. This challenges society’s objectification of women, especially Black women. Her art has been interpreted both as critiquing societal norms and offering hope for change. Mutu’s use of “grotesque” textures is influenced by medical illustrations of tropical diseases, highlighting the visual complexity of the human body. She seamlessly transitions between painting and sculpture, utilizing her mind as an object maker. Mutu’s art serves as a platform for critiquing Western beauty standards and challenging images that render individuals invisible. Her work transcends boundaries, offering a powerful perspective on the complexities of identity, representation, and societal norms.
