Biography

Anouar Smarrai is an artist who masters Arabic and Amazigh calligraphy, sculpture, furniture decoration as well as advertising signs on all types of media. On all supports, from wooden or wrought iron objects to tadelakt walls, including goat skins. Custom work. Personalized calligraphy. Located in the medina of Essaouira, the Artsmarrai workshop-boutique offers sculptures of insects made from copper wire, argan seeds and women of Essaouira that Anouar Smarrai makes from pebbles, tiles old or quartz crystal, which it mounts on a metal foot assembled with a mixture of plaster and glue. Anouar masters many techniques and trades, working with metal, wood, plaster, tadelakt… Since 2008, due to the difficulty in finding the materials he was looking for, he started to take an interest in recycled materials. He trained by observing, putting his observations into practice until he achieved his creative objectives. Materials are collected during walks through renovation sites. He uses basic tools (pliers, hammer, soldering iron, glue) and makes the tools he needs.
