Sabrina Belouaar

Biography

Born in 1986 in Charenton le Pont, France. Lives and works in Paris, France. Encompassing sculpture, photography, video and installation, the artistic vocabular that Sabrina Belouaar (born in 1986, lives and works in Paris) has developed investigates, with sensitivity, the way our social and cultural identities are constructed, how they echo and collide with each other in a continuous back and forth – from the Maghreb to Western Europe, from the centre to the periphery. The artist does not hesitate to question our preconceptions by revealing the unspoken power dynamics at play in both political and familial spheres. In a world awash with the overabundance of images shaped and spread by the mass media, Sabrina Belouaar critically addresses the contradictions and mechanisms of our reality, playing with stereotypes and revealing their ambiguities. She weaves bits of information about post-colonial history that she finds through her research into her own history. Thus she is able to combine the political and the poetic, giving substance to works that make visible what is generally marginalized. Sabrina Belouaar’s field of practice – close to investigative work – allows her to question representations that make up our daily life, to slip into them, explore and hijack them, to highlight their narrative, poetic or critical potential.
