Nichodimus Mutasa

Biography

Nichodemus Mutasa has a strong inclination towards sculpting Heads in Abstract form. Currently based at Chitungwiza Arts Centre, Nichodemus Mutasa prefers working with hard stones like Cobalt and Springstone, he believes that hard stones bring out his artform better. Chapungu Sculpture Park was the place he started his sculpting career. He finds it very important for artists to work in Art Villages and says most shona stone sculptors who have succeeded Internationally passed through sculpting villages like Tengenenge Village. Galleries in Germany, USA and Netherlands are among his biggest clients. Nicodemus sees stone sculpture as a form of employment and he himself has created employment by working with young apprentices who help him to polish sculptures. He decries the economic environment in Zimbabwe which he says is inhibiting the growth of the Arts industry. He says at times artists struggle to buy raw stones to sculpt which he thinks limits creativity because an artist is forced to work only the stones he can afford. Nicodemus says he will do whatever he can to support the arts industry in his own ways. He says he will never give up and will hang in there.
