Biography

Born in Cairo, lives and works between Paris and Cairo. His themes of photographic work, centered on Egypt, involve the Middle East and Africa, among others. Between 1990 and 1994, he undertook a series of portraits of Egyptians. In his journey, one permanence: inhabited places and the night. The work on the rituals and daily lives of the Copts (Christians of Egypt) presented at the Bamako Biennale in 2003 and published in 2007 is a reference. He continues his research on several themes in Egypt, including the concept of modernity. He devotes several works to it exhibited in different museums and galleries, in France and abroad. At the request of the French Institute, in 2005 he produced photographic compositions on four African writers and their writings: Latent Portraits , an exhibition exhibited mainly in Africa. In 2007, he conducted research on the relationship between Bedouins and Modernity in Jordan. Work on the Profane and the Sacred on the island of Reunion was initiated in 2007 and in 2010 he carried out a study on the Hammams of San’aa – Yemen. Member of the photographic agency CIRIC, he carries out commissions for cultural institutions in France. From 2006, he took a critical look; his experience as a scenographer leads him towards visual installations. In the series Egyptians or the clothes make the monk – 2011, he disguises himself as several types of Egyptians. Invitation to happiness – 2011 and Reality is soluble in the image – 2015, take the form of real-false advertising posters. Spring Journey – 2013, Beyond – 2013, Passage of Promises – 2014, speak of the relationship with the image and the sacred text. La Condition ovine – 2014, Kalila & Demna – 2015 and On Authority – 2015, are ironic about authoritarian deceptions.A dream – 2016 more poetic, evokes individual constraints.
