Mohammed Laouli

Biography

The work of Mohammed Laouli constitutes the starting point of an endogenous analysis of the space where he lives. The artist appropriates and dissects the elements that surround him to produce an inventory on the conditions in the societies he comes in direct contact with. Even though he is politically engaged in the way he thinks, Laouli’s approach is non-discursive: he does not claim to be an advisor, a teacher or a politician. Wandering the streets, slums and wastelands, the artist simply seeks to explore his vision and his consciousness. Nevertheless, his approach consists of a critical reflection on the systems of power he is a witness of, namely, the political, cultural and economic ones. The work of Mohammed Laouli has been subject of several collective and solo exhibitions, like at Le Cube – independent art room in Rabat, at the Dakar Biennale 2018, at the Kunstmuseum Mülheim (2017), at the Carreau du Temple in Paris (2017), at the ZKM in Karlsruhe (2013), at the Marrakech Biennial (2014) , at Mucem in Marseille (2014), at the Bruges Cultural Center (2013), at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London (2012), at La Centrale for Contemporary Art in Brussels (2012). He was also invited by Pakavait Studio in Moscow (2005), at the School of Fine Arts of Marrakech (2010), at La source du Lion (2013). He received a grant from the Cité Internationale des Arts, Paris (2011) and a grant from the Résidence Méditerranée at La Friche Belle de Mai in Marseille (2018). Mohammed Laouli lives and works between Salé and Marseilles.
