Michael Gitlin

Biography

Michael Gitlin, born in 1943 in Cape Town, South Africa, is a contemporary sculptor known for his abstract and reductive works. His family relocated from South Africa to Israel in 1948. Gitlin pursued English Literature and Art History at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, simultaneously studying at the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design, where he graduated in 1967. He furthered his studies in New York City, earning an MFA from Pratt Institute in 1972. Gitlin’s early museum exhibitions included a show at the Israel Museum in Jerusalem (1977) and a feature in the Documenta exhibition in Kassel, Germany (1977). His work gained recognition and was acquired by prestigious institutions like the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam and the Guggenheim Museum in New York. Throughout the 1980s, Gitlin taught sculpture at various institutions in both the United States and Israel. He is associated with the generation of Post-Minimalist artists working in Manhattan and Europe during the early 1970s, which included notable figures like Gordon Matta-Clark and Joel Shapiro. Gitlin’s sculptures are primarily wall pieces, relying on architectural elements for physical and contextual support. His work is characterized as abstract and reductive, often utilizing materials like paper and wood. Gitlin’s artistic focus is on the relationship between the object and the space it occupies. In recent years, Gitlin has incorporated materials like steel wool, copper wire, foam, and black spandex into his work. Additionally, drawing has played a significant role in Gitlin’s artistic endeavors.
