Margaret Nagawa

Biography

Margaret Nagawa, born in Kampala, Uganda, pursued her passion for visual arts at the Kampala School of Fine Arts. Following her graduation, she became the artist-in-residence at The Gallery Cafe in Kampala, where she worked under the guidance of Canadian Bahá´ís, Sylvia Walters and Karyn Wilson. They were instrumental in introducing art to Kampala’s community along with the allure of quality coffee. During her residency, Margaret also took on managerial roles, which included travel to procure crafts and artworks from various African countries. In 1994, Margaret ventured into the art of batik, inspired by Zimbabwean artist Thomas Chindingo’s innovative use of cassava paste. Her technique involved applying cassava porridge with a nozzle, creating distinctive patterns on fabric. After completing her initial artistic endeavors, Margaret pursued further studies, earning a Master’s degree in Fine Art Administration and Curatorship from Goldsmith’s College, University of London. Her program not only honed her artistic skills but also equipped her with valuable insights into managing the arts. During her time in London, Margaret conceived and organized a joint UK-Uganda exhibition titled “Smiles and Shudders; Perspectives on War and Peace.” The exhibition provided a platform for artists to express their views on these themes, shedding light on the resilience and hope of Ugandans despite the challenging times they faced. After returning to Uganda, Margaret continued to make significant contributions to the arts community. She assumed the role of Chairman for the Uganda Artists Association, overseeing various events and programs aimed at fostering artistic dialogue and growth. Today, Margaret Nagawa remains a prominent figure in the Ugandan art scene, combining her artistic endeavors with her commitment to supporting and uplifting fellow artists.
