Biography

Lema Kusa, born on July 24, 1944, in Kinkenge, Bas-Congo, is a renowned graphic artist and painter from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. He received his education at the Protestant school of pastors and teachers in Kimpese. In 1958, he enrolled at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kinshasa, specializing in advertising painting and illustrations. After seven years, he earned a diploma and a scholarship to pursue graphic arts at the Saint-Luc Higher Institute of Fine Arts in Liège, Belgium. Additionally, Kusa undertook courses at the Liege Graduate School of Business and completed further studies as a visiting student at the University of Louvain’s Institute of Political and Social Science. He furthered his professional development through various positions, including working at the University of Louvain’s External Relations department and in advertising agencies and printers in Brussels and Liège. Upon his return to Zaire, Lema Kusa took on the role of professor and head of advertising at the newly established Academy of Fine Arts. Simultaneously, he assumed leadership of the drawing studio at a prominent advertising agency in Congo. In 1974, he founded his own agency, “Design Promotion.” Starting from 1981, he held the position of deputy section chief in charge of teaching at the Academy of Fine Arts. Additionally, Kusa served as CEO of the National Institute of Arts in Kinshasa. As of 2008, he continued to hold this position alongside his role as a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts.

His work has been shown at numerous exhibitions including the Third Extraordinary Congress of the International Association of Art Critics at Kinshasa N’Sele (1973), exhibition of avant-garde painters in Paris (1975), Festival of Basel (1978) and solo exhibitions in New York and Atlanta (1980). He participated in the National Symposium on Authenticity in September 1981 at N’Sele held by the Writers’ Union of Zaire. He is a member of the National Association of Artists in Fine Arts and an associate member of AICA / Zaire.
