Kudzanai-Violet Hwami

Biography

Kudzanai-Violet Hwami, born in 1993, is a Zimbabwean painter currently based in London, England. Her art delves into themes of sexuality, race, and gender. Raised in Zimbabwe until age nine, followed by eight years in South Africa, Hwami then settled in London at 17. She completed her Bachelor of Fine Arts at Wimbledon College of Arts and obtained a Master of Fine Arts from Oxford University’s Ruskin School of Art in 2021. Hwami’s impressive career includes solo and group exhibitions worldwide. Notably, she participated in the 2019 Venice Biennale and was featured in Apollo magazine’s “40 Under 40 Africa” in 2020. Her work is housed in the permanent collection of South Africa’s Zeitz MOCAA museum and she is currently represented by Victoria Miro. In her artistic process, Hwami meticulously plans her creations, often incorporating collaged images as a foundational element. This approach was influenced by her early experiences exploring identity and sexuality through online platforms like Tumblr. Her work serves as a powerful exploration of queer identity and the human form.
