Bouchra Khalili

Biography

Bouchra Khalili is a Moroccan-French visual artist born in 1975 in Casablanca. She was raised between Morocco and France and pursued studies in Film at Sorbonne Nouvelle and Fine Arts at École nationale supérieure d’arts de Paris-Cergy. Currently, she resides in Berlin, Germany. Khalili’s artistic practice spans film, video, installation, photography, and prints, often employing documentary cinema techniques to explore historical speculation and give voice to those marginalized by the nation-state. Her projects serve as platforms for political minorities to articulate narratives of resistance. She engages in personal storytelling with a focus on political issues, approaching citizenship, community, and political agency critically and ethically. Khalili meets her subjects in sites of transit across the Middle East, North Africa, and Europe, conducting preliminary conversations, filming, and collecting data. Her work brings forth a human touch, portraying real-life stories and hardships for audiences to relate to and stand in solidarity with. Khalili’s subjects, while not necessarily seen, are heard articulately in their native languages, adding a personal dimension without compromising privacy and comfort. Rather than relying on sensationalism or graphic imagery, Khalili employs specific filming techniques and fixed frames, emphasizing the power of spoken language. Her projects challenge dominant narratives surrounding migration and statelessness, shedding light on the violence they perpetuate. Khalili’s documentary practice combines a traditional seriousness with an innovative approach, setting it apart from emotionally charged and experimental politically motivated works. Her exhibitions have been showcased worldwide, including solo shows at MoMA in New York, Palais de Tokyo in Paris, MACBA in Barcelona, and participation in major events like the Venice Biennale and documenta.
