Biography

Bernardine Evaristo, a distinguished British writer, has an extensive body of work spanning various genres including fiction, poetry, essays, and more. Her novel “Girl, Woman, Other” garnered the Booker Prize in 2019, making her the first black woman and black British person to achieve this honor. The book also received several other prestigious awards and became a bestseller. Evaristo’s writings predominantly explore themes related to the African diaspora. In addition to her novels, Evaristo has ventured into non-fiction with works like “Manifesto: On Never Giving Up” (2021) and “Look Again: Feminism” (2021), the latter of which is a reflection on the representation of women of colour in British art. She’s also collaborated on projects with artists and designers, contributing poetic text for Valentino’s Collezione Milano collection. Evaristo’s impact in the literary world is underscored by over 76 awards, fellowships, and honours, along with numerous appearances on annual Book of the Year lists. She has been recognized as one of 100 Great Black Britons and has featured prominently in media, including documentaries and interviews. Beyond her literary contributions, Evaristo is actively involved in advocating for increased representation of artists and writers of colour. She holds numerous fellowships and honorary titles, including those from esteemed institutions like the Royal Society of Literature and the American Academy of Arts & Sciences. Born in Woolwich, London, Evaristo is the fourth of eight children to an English mother and a Nigerian father. Her upbringing was influenced by both her diverse heritage and her involvement in the arts from a young age. She pursued her education at institutions like Eltham Hill Girls’ Grammar School, Rose Bruford College of Speech & Drama, and Goldsmiths, University of London, where she earned her PhD in Creative Writing. Evaristo’s commitment to inclusion and representation extends to her initiatives and schemes aimed at fostering diversity in the creative industries. Currently residing in London, she is married and continues to be an influential figure in the literary world.
